In May of 2009, the Eastern Sierra Nordic Ski Association, in conjunction with Mammoth Mountain Race Department formed a Junior Competition Team. The goal for the program is to provide year round training for motivated juniors who aspire to the Junior Olympic level and beyond. The program is headed by Olympian, US National Champion, and long time Mammoth coach Nancy Fiddler.

The program has three training blocks: Dryland 1 (May-August), Dryland 2 (Sept.-Nov.) and and on snow block (Dec.-mid April). For the summer program, we had six athletes between the ages of 14 and 18 of varying levels of experience. All athletes are from Mammoth, Crowley Lake, and Bishop.

All junior participants in the program were provided with a training schedule that included 3-4 group workouts a week. Training activities included rollerskiing, strength training, running, and hiking. For the summer, we took advantage of the great hiking and peak bagging the Eastern Sierra has to offer, and did most of our overdistance training in the mountains. Interval training took place in the form of running (track intervals and forest running) and ski walking, with rollerskiing intervals introduced at the end of the summer. We used rollerskiing for distance, specific strength, speed, and technique training for the summer.

"I am very pleased with how the program went this summer", says Nancy. "We are losing some athletes to fall school sports, but the plan is for them to be part time with the program on the weekends for the fall. Two participants are heading off to college; Dayna Stimson back to Bates and Bryce Tiernan starting at MSU. Both hope to ski for their schools this winter. I hope to pick up some new participants, as well."
