FAR WEST NORDIC 2008 JO RESULTS

SPRINT CLASSIC COMPETITION
Monday, March 10, 2008
RESULTS | PHOTOS

Not an exceptional day for the Far West Nordic contingent at the Sprint Competitions at Kincaid Park in Anchorage. A cold night, heavily-tilled up old snow, relatively fast tracks on a rolling, gentle course, and klister conditions (yesterday's high was within 3 degrees of the RECORD high for Anchorage on March 9th). Far West qualified only two athletes into the Sprint Heat rounds of 24: Joanne Reid, who had the second fastest J2 Girl time of the day in the preliminaries, and Annika Taylor, 22nd for J2 Girls. Joanne made it out of the Quarterfinals and into the Semi's where she finished out of the running to advance to the A Final, finally finishing 2nd in the B finals for 8th place overall. Annika did not advance to the Semi's. The other close-call was Sophie Aaron's 25th place finish in the J2 Girls prelims, one place out of qualifying.

FREESTYLE INTERVAL START COMPETITION
Wednesday, March 12, 2007
RESULTS | PHOTOS

A course change (necessitated by some radical icy downhills on the originally planned course) and an inch or two of fresh snow overnight led to some beautiful racing under overcast and snow flurried skies.
The Far West team was led once again by Joanne Reid in the J2 Girls division. It was an interval start day, with coaches spread all around the course to give splits and cheer on the racers. The challenging course led to all-out "Git After It" skiing by the Far West team, with some exceptional results sprinkled throughout the placings, notably Austin Meng, Michelle Cahill, and Stefan Benier, among others.

CLASSIC MASS START COMPETITION

RESULTS | PHOTOS

A win by Joanne Reid certainly was the highlight of this gorgeous, sunny day, with Joanne leading the race for much of the course, then falling back to third on the final uphill only to catch and pass the New England and Alaska skiers in front of her on the final run through the stadium. Bernie Nelson showed incredible form in skiing to 9th place in the incredibly competitive J1 Girls event, gaining Far West's 4th medal of the week. Annika Taylor was challenging for a top 10 until breaking a pole and falling back to finish in 27th. Russell Kennedy was also in the running for medal for much of his race until finishing in 22nd Place in the Boys J1. Carson Lindsay and Laura Rodrigues also skied to excellent finishes.

RELAY COMPETITION
Saturday, March 15, 2007
RESULTS | PHOTOS
Back to overcast skies and the coldest day of the week for the Relays, our final event at Kincaid Park. A no-medal day for the Far West skiers, unfortunately, with some outstanding individual results but no hardware to take home. Joanne Reid had the second fastest J2 time of the day for the girls, making up 4 spots during her anchor leg. Russell Kennedy finished his scramble leg in 9th place, as did Annika Taylor for J2 Girls.

Even though the results did not show a lot of medals this week, the Far West Nordic skiers skied extremely hard and "got after it" in every race. The team was upbeat throughout, and all seemed to have an incredible time in Anchorage, Alaska.
