The Week is DONE!! What was your FAVORITE moment from Junior Olympics 2007?

Janelle Webb
My favorite part of JOs was during the 5k classic race.  I managed to pass some people on a downhill, I had never been able to pass anyone on a downhill before, and I think that it was mostly because of the hard work that I have put into getting over my fear of downhills.

I loved the racing experience at Soldier Hollow.  Everyday you thought you knew the course you would be racing, but due to how sunny it was the course was always different than you thought.  It was very intimidating to be skiing with the best girls in the country.  It also is disheartening because you realize how much you have to train to keep up with them and hold your own at a national level.

My favorite part of the 2007 JOs was the classic 10k.   It seemed that everything fell into place to make it my best race of the season.   I had a good night’s sleep beforehand, I had plenty of energy due to the wonderful food that our chefs made, and I paced myself perfectly.  The result of all of this was my best race here in Utah.  The food was excellent here as well.  Every day we had huge, delicious meals.

Well, the beginning of the week did not go as well as I had hoped but things are beginning to look up! Today was the 5 km classic race and due to the decreasing amounts of snow they changed the course, thankfully. The new course was much flatter with less challenging hills.  The wax was good, I had kick and my glide was pretty fast. Today for the first time, my 5 km time was in the 17 minutes. Tomorrow is the relays and I am looking forward to an enlightening experience.

So far, racing has gone really good this week.  I think that today’s race was my best so far, and I hope that tomorrow’s will be even better!  My goal for tomorrow is to ski the best race I can, and get my relay team into a good position overall.

Well today was a tough race because the snow changed drastically from the morning to the afternoon races. The boys races were slow and the wax was bomber! This week has been a great time and really is a great way to get motivated to train over the summer. My goal for tomorrow is to sleep in, drink some coffee and then have a stellar race with my French friend Stefan and other relay partner Drew. It should be a good time.

After racing the freestyle race yesterday, I think that I had and still have a lot more in me then I have thought. At first my goal was to only get top 25, and now that I got 15th place, I think that not only me, but everyone can do a lot better than they are perceiving.

I think that today’s course was fun and challenging, it threw me off a little that they changed the 5 km lap from last time that I raced here.  The new course is defiantly different from the old one, but I like it is more rolling and you could defiantly glide at least three quarters of the way up the next uphill on 90% of them.  The downhills are very important to having a good race in this venue the first lap I saw at least 5-7 girls down at the bottom of the whales tale ad I caught up to a few girls as people struggled to dodge them.   I had a good race today and that is making this report biased, thanks for reading.

The mass start was pretty cool, considering how slow we were forced to ski at the beginning. I ended up passing a bunch of people on the flats leading to downhills because they were afraid., only to be passed by them on the uphills. It was fun. Really.

The 5k course that we had yesterday had been changed from the Olympic 5k that we are accustomed  to skiing. More hills were added, but I liked the new course more because we could go all out on the downhills and make it up a good portion of the uphills. It also helped having some of the best wax out there (thanks wax guys!). Yesterday everything clicked for me: the wax was amazing, the course was great for me, and I had a great warm up.

OUCH!

The Freestyle’s Tomorrow: How are ya gonna go FASTER? Or...What do you think of the Trails at Soldier Hollow?

BRYCE TIERNAN
I don’t think you would want to go faster than a sprint pace in a 15K; but for those ignorant enough to ask such a question I will give an answer.  First I will spend an insane amount of time waxing 1 pair of skis.  Next, I will give my skis to the Far West wax “wizards” for some magic STUFF.  Finally, I will consult my physician as to the best way to increase my physical performance in less than a day.  If my well thought out plan does not work I will put klister on the tops of my skis and allow any of the faster athletes to draft up onto the back of my skis.

he courses here are really gorgeous… they’re all really wide and nicely groomed and you can see almost all of the course from one point. There’s also a pretty dramatic view of the mountains which adds a nice touch to your warm up and cool down. The wideness of the course was also pretty ideal for the sprint race because there is always a chance to pass and I didn’t hear of any one falling… all and all I am quite impressed with the trails here..

Amazingly enough I felt less nervous then I do at a normal race. It was so awesome to know that I had made it here, that the racing didn’t seem that intense. My race felt really great. It was the best sprinting I had ever done. Even though I got 50th out of 57 girls, I still feel great about it. I can't wait till Wednesday race!

Wowie!  I’m so far out of my league. The whole day was a complete eye opener: all the people, and the speed of some of the other teams athletes, not to mention height and girth. But, hey, at least there are no more people wearing shorts over their spandex anymore; everyone is serious. I’m definitely going to have to take training a lot more seriously to move up in the standings.

The experience of the Junior Olympics is amazing. The first race went well for me especially since this is the first time I raced against people from parts of the whole country. The atmosphere here is a lot different than any other race I have ever been to but really enjoy the feeling of being surrounded by such great athletes.
