Truckee High Wins First National Boys High School Title,
Bozeman Defends National Girls High School Title.
The National Cross-Country Ski Education Foundation awarded the Roger Weston National High School championship cups to Truckee High and Bozeman High at the conclusion of the 2006 Junior Olympics March 12, 2006 in Houghton, Michigan.
The Truckee Boys team avenged their second place finish to Aspen Valley H.S., CO in the High School standings in 2005 behind senior Matt Gelso who won gold medals in both the classic and the skate races.
After the first days mass start classic race Truckee held onto a slim one point lead over West Anchorage High School. Truckee staked their lead thanks to Matt, his younger brother Dan who was a fifth place finisher, and Andrew Pado who finished 15th in the classic race. Going into the second day it looked to be a battle for the cup, but West Anchorage ran out of luck. Summit High of Oregon skied well again to move up to second place and Durango made a late charge to keep the cup in Colorado, but Truckee’s depth was too much. In the skate race Matt Gelso won again, Spenser Wood provided help with his seventh place finish and young Dan Gelso’s 16th place locked things up. This is the first Boys National Championships for Truckee. Their girls team won the 2004 title.
The Bozeman girls team was also locked in a dog fight after the classic race, holding a one point lead over Vermont’s Stratton Mountain School and a ten point lead over Vermont’s Burke Mountain Academy. The Bozeman girls got points from every class in the classic race, with senior Melanie Park finishing 9th, Junior Erika Flowers finishing 8th and Sophmore Kate Dolan finishing 6th. Stratton Mountain almost kept pace behind Sophie Caldwell’s 2nd and Parker Tyler’s 4th, but their third skier was a little off the pace. On the skate day it was all Bozeman as Dolan streaked to victory, Asa Carlson was sixth and Flowers finished 11th.. Stratton Mountain finished distant 2nd, while Liberty Bell High school in Oregon rode a great day to take third place. This is the second consecutive National High School Title for Bozeman.
