Bryce Tiernan of Bishop, California, 2009 Recipient

It's Hot. At 9am it is already 94F on this August day. You put on your running shoes and head out the door. This is the 10th day in a row of expected 100F+ temps. You look up to the high Sierra Nevada Mountains to the West, wishing you were up there, maybe sliding on a last remaining snow patch. You wish you were anywhere but here, Bishop, California, running through the sagebrush. You put your head down and keep running; 45min to go. The West Line Street Canal is calling you. You find your favorite spot and jump in. Refreshed you crank out another hour with some speed bursts and head home. The swamp cooler in the kitchen cools you off as you drink chocolate milk to re-hydrate. You put your feet up on a chair and fill in your training log.
This evening, about 7pm, when it cools off enough to be tolerable, you will go out again for a two hour rollerski working on V2 technique and upper body endurance. It'll be hot but you are determined. You have goals far outreaching this tiny town and it's sweltering heat. Besides, it' is only 3 months 'til snow.
Such is 'a day in the life of' the 2009 recipient of Far West's Ted Beauchamp Scholarship, Bryce Tiernan.
Bryce lives in Bishop, California, at apprx. 4000ft, on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada- the hot, dry side. The closest snow for him in winter is 1 hour away in Mammoth at apprx. 8000ft. Bryce makes the drive up there 3-6x's a week during the winter and frequently in the summer for coaching support from Nancy Fiddler and to seek out training partners. Bryce is a Senior at Bishop High School and will be graduating this spring. He plans to attend Montana State University in Bozeman and would like to ski and climb there.
For his utter dedication, amazing progress with few resources, achieving top results, calm demeanor, and love of the sport, all epitomizing the late Ted Beauchamp, Bryce was an obvious choice for this year's scholarship.
Congratulations! Bryce.

This scholarship fund was established by the Beauchamp family and the Far West Nordic Ski Association in memory of Ted Beauchamp, a long time supporter of cross country skiing and a dedicated member of the Far West board of directors. Ted had a deep love for the outdoors and had a passion for nordic skiing, which he passed on to others. Ted taught and coached many local youths and helped pass on some of his love for skiing to them. He was always there to volunteer for any event and to help with the coaching at the races. Ted’s two children, James and Emily, both have been highly successful participants in cross country ski racing in the Far West and Ted ‘s wife, Sue, has been an active supporter of the Far West Nordic Ski Association.

The Scholarship Fund of $300 per recipient is set up to help a different individual each year who shows a deep love for nordic skiing, is a dedicated athlete who has the desire and potential to compete at the national level, and may have some financial need. The recipient is chosen each spring by the Far West Board and the Beauchamp family.

The Ted Beauchamp Scholarship is available to any Far West athlete who feels they qualify based on need and their character similarities to Ted Beauchamp. It is given as Far West Bucks and is available up to 300$.
If you would like to be considered for next year's scholarship, please send an email to info@farwestnordic.org and it will be forwarded to, and eligibility will be assessed, by the Far West Junior Committee. All requests must be made in writing any time during the year, but prior to April 1.
