Wednesday, March 12:
Minus 25 when we went to breakfast this morning! It will probably be right around the legal minimum of minus 4 at race time.
A few heartbreaks occurred in the sprint races, like Nick S solidly in 2nd place at the top of the last hill heading into the stadium in the quarter finals and slipping a little on a patch of ice and losing some momentum and getting passed at the finish line for second and not going up to the semi finals. But all-in-all, a solid day. Most kids were happy because they skied well or were happy to get their first JO race under their belt.
Several of the girls saw the Northern lights Monday night and Carl Reid saw a moose on his cool down after the Sprints. Temps are dropping everyday we are here. This morning was minus 15 when we went to breakfast on Tuesday. It was minus 25(!) when we went to breakfast this morning! It will probably be right around the legal minimum of minus 4 at race time.So far the kids are handling the cold really well but today's race has a long cold downhill that could freeze a few noses and ears. We will be keeping a good eye out for frostbite.
Wednesday's skate course is brutally hard. The J1 and Oj’s have a course that is equivalent to skiing down into the black hole at ASC then skiing out and up as high as crater lake. Snow is slow and there is almost no flat - this will be a real test of fitness.
