If you’re reading this, you’re probably a skier, or at least you’re hanging around with one. Although the trails at Auburn Ski Club are superb for racing and training, there are a multitude of world-class cross country ski resorts that surround the area — probably the best concentration of great track skiing in the entire country! We HIGHLY recommend that you try skiing at these fantastics resorts sometime during your stay. You’ll go back home raving about the quality of grooming, the beautiful views, and the incredible terrain and trails this area has to offer.

Royal Gorge Cross Country
This is the granddaddy of them all, the one you’ve most assuredly heard of from wherever you call home. Located close to Donner Summit, Royal Gorge has the most extensive trail system in North America, with impeccable grooming, great amenities, beautiful scenic views, and even 4 rope-tow lifts to let you have more fun on nordic skis than you ever could imagine. Plus, the most snowfall of any ski resort you’ve ever seen! (530) 426-3871

Tahoe Donner Cross Country
Not as well-known or huge as its neighbor Royal Gorge, Tahoe Donner XC has become world famous in its own right. Incomparable terrain for nordic skiing highlights this area, with trails that will suit any nordic skier, whether they are novice or expert racer. Incredible views from peak tops, idyllic rolling terrain in the beautiful Euer Valley, and heart-pounding descents abound at this area just minutes north of Truckee. (530) 587-9484

Tahoe Cross Country
This is one of the venerable xc ski resorts in the entire area, and has served the North Shore of Lake Tahoe for over 30 years. Situated near Tahoe City on the northwest shore of the Lake, beautiful, rolling terrain and a friendly, community-oriented atmosphere highlight the extensive trail system, including great views of Lake Tahoe. This resort is also the starting point for the area’s biggest race, the 30 kilometer Great Ski Race from Tahoe to Truckee, slated for March 1st in 2009. (530) 583-5475

Northstar-at-Tahoe
Tucked backed away from the alpine ski area at Northstar, these XC ski trails are the area’s hidden jewels. Wide, beautifully groomed trails abound throughout the valley and ridgeline, and at a couple of spots the views of Lake Tahoe are some of the finest you’ll find in the entire region. A bit more difficult to get to (you need to ride the gondola up to the XC Ski Center and trails), it’s worth the effort. It's also the finish line of the Sierra's newest premier Nordic race event, the Tahoe Rim Tour. (530) 562-2475

Spooner Lake Cross Country
Another lesser-known gem of cross country skiing, Spooner Lake boasts some of the most beautiful and challenging trails in the entire area. It is located on the eastern side of Lake Tahoe, just minutes away from Carson City, Nevada and Incline Village. If you want views of the Lake and exhilarating downhills, this is definitely the spot to hit. (775) 749-5349

Squaw Creek Cross Country
Tucked into a beautiful alpine valley that contains the famous Squaw Valley USA alpine resort, Squaw Creek XC offers some very gentle and scenic terrain, with the benefit of having the world-class Resort at Squaw Creek right there for a variety of amenities, including great restaurants, spa, and more. (530) 583-6300

Kirkwood Cross Country
It’s definitely a bit of a drive from Truckee, but if you’re looking for an adventure for an off-day of racing, you might want to take a tour of Lake Tahoe and end up down at Kirkwood for some great skiing and exceptional views. Located south of Lake Tahoe, over the crest of historic Carson Pass, this is not the spot to travel on a stormy day, but if it’s sunny and you want to explore, try it out. (530) 258-7248
