THE FAR WEST NORDIC SKI EDUCATION ASSOCIATION

Spring Skiing isn't over...Yet!
Even though conditions didn't seem favorable, some intrepid Far Westers took off for the Eastern Sierra and an incredible backcountry adventure skate loop. The motto? Never trust the weather forecasts! Go for it! CLICK HERE for more pics.

ONLY THE HIGH COUNTRY FOR SKIING
Not much left in around the Tahoe area for skiing except for some high backcountry skiing, so the transition to Spring/Summer is on!

UPCOMING MEETINGS
NEXT FAR WEST NORDIC BOARD MEETING
All Members Welcome and Encouraged to Attend!
Monday, May 19th, 2008, at 7 pm @ John Gerbino's Home (Email for Directions)

ANOTHER RACE, ANOTHER WIN FOR BOARD MEMBER ZURN
Congratulations to Molly for the 50K Wild West Ultra Marathon
Despite leg cramps and it being the first race of her running season, Far West Board Member Molly Zurn started the spring with a win at the 50 Kilometer Wild West Ultra Marathon in Lone Pine, California.

The Wild West is the U.S.'s third oldest trail Marathon, but is surely the most scenic, with backdrops of the Sierra eastern escarpment and Mount Whitney, and includes about 5,500 feet of elevation gain and loss.

FAR WEST NORDIC ANNOUNCES LOCAL U-25 CHALLENGE GRANT
$1,000 Targeted To Be Raised by Local Division For NCCSEF Program
A local donor has stoked the fire on announcing a Challenge Grant for the National Cross Country Ski Education Foundation (NCCSEF) to benefit ski racers from the age of 20-25 years old (see original article below). In an attempt to raise an immediate $1,000 for young adults, Far West is asking members to donate to the NCCSEF program by either sending them a check directly, or sending money to Far West Nordic noted specifically for the "Stanley Grant." When our division reaches $500, this donor will match that amount for a total of $1,000. To donate to this program, please mail in a check to P.O. Box 10046, Truckee, CA 96162. Note that it is for NCCSEF. To donate via our website, CLICK HERE.

A Matching Grant from a generous donor (one who has supported Far West Nordic for years as well) was been announced by the National Cross Country Ski Education Foundation (NCCSEF) to benefit ski racers from the age of 20-25 years old. Far West Nordic has recognized the need to keep these former juniors ski racing at high levels, and this "Stanley Grant" from NCCSEF is a great start. If $50,000 is raised from NCCSEF to match the grant, there will be $100,000 available for top skiers in each region starting in 2008. For more information on this exciting program, CLICK HERE.

XC JUNIOR OLYMPICS (Junior Nationals) AWARDED TO FAR WEST IN 2009
USSA Convention Approves Bid for Auburn Ski Club for 2009
One year ahead of schedule, the U.S. Ski Association awarded the 2009 JUNIOR OLYMPICS (soon to be known again as "Junior Nationals") to Auburn Ski Club and Far West Nordic. ASC Director Bill Clark and ASC Nordic head Sally Jones have led the way in acquiring JO's for 2010 in order to re-create the magic of the events there in 2005. A last-minute "swap" with New England's Presque Isle venue has led to the championships being scheduled here for 2009 (Maine in 2010). Get ready for another great national-caliber event here in Far West. CLICK HERE to go to the xcjuniornationals2009.org website.
